Mechanism

Biotin: Functions as a coenzyme in carboxylation reactions → supports fatty acid synthesis, amino acid metabolism, and keratin production.
Folic Acid: Converted to tetrahydrofolate → essential for DNA synthesis, red blood cell maturation, and prevention of megaloblastic anemia.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Biotin absorbed in small intestine; Folic Acid absorbed in jejunum.
  • Distribution: Biotin widely distributed; Folic Acid stored in liver.
  • Metabolism: Folic Acid converted to tetrahydrofolate; Biotin metabolized in liver.
  • Excretion: Both excreted via urine and feces.
  • Half-life: Biotin ~2 hrs; Folic Acid ~3–4 hrs.
